My First Woodworking Project:

I keep my first woodworking project on a shelf in my office. Many years ago, when I was sixteen, I took a beginner woodturning class. That sealed my fate. I made one small myrtle wood bowl and fell in love. The smell of the wood, the peace of the shop, the feel of the wood and the tools in my hand, the pride that came with completely a finished project, Hell, even the smell of lemon finish left me inspired. I’m always curious about what inspired people to take up woodworking.

I was the only one in the class who got a 100% on their first bowl. I couldn’t stop after that. Many years and many other woodworking and woodturning projects came, but here we are and I’m still obsessed.  Every new project feels just like the first.

  1. It’s hard for me to say exactly what inspired me to woodwork. I guess there were many things. One of the first times I can clearly recall is after watching a documentary on PBS about guy named Richard Proenneke. He moved to the Alaskan Wilderness and built a log cabin and it’s furniture by hand. I was pretty impressed.
